Assiniboian qualifies for BWF Badminton World Championships

Sixteen-year-old athlete Wyatt Lightfoot has qualified for the BWF Badminton World Championships in Basel, Switzerland, which will be held this year from August 19 to August 25.

Sixteen-year-old athlete Wyatt Lightfoot has qualified for the BWF Badminton World Championships in Basel, Switzerland, which will be held this year from August 19 to August 25. This is the first time for able-bodied athletes and para-athletes to play together with a total of 698 entries.
From the World Championships, Wyatt will travel to Lima, Peru where he will be one of seven athletes from Canada to participate in badminton at the Parapan Am Games from August 27 to September 3. This will be the first time in history that para badminton will be played at the Parapan Am Games. The Parapan Am Games is also one of the qualifiers for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, where the sport will be making its Paralympic debut.
Lightfoot is currently ranked 14th in the world. Lightfoot is working his way to the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020. Lightfoot from Assiniboia trains at CrossCourt Badminton in Regina under Frank Gaudet. Frank, who has been named Head Coach of the National Para Badminton team, is attending both events in Switzerland and Lima.
