“It’s been amazing,” said Lynn Holmes, a Gravelbourg Cares organizer, as she portrayed the generous turnout on Saturday, February 8 for the shuttle service’s fundraiser held in the Gravelbourg Parish Hall. “We are currently at 175. There’s a hockey game in town, so some people are coming and going, but this a testimonial to our community and the surrounding communities.”
The popularity of this fundraiser proved the Gravelbourg Cares Shuttle has acquired more prominence in the south central region, including Assiniboia. “Assiniboia people are starting to respond to our service,” Holmes added.
The second annual Gravelbourg Cares Family Supper and Dance Fundraiser in the Parish Hall on 114 First Avenue West ran from 5-11:30 p.m. Scott Heatcoat and the Chums played music as people danced the evening away. The cost to attend this exciting occasion on Saturday night cost $25 per person, $60 per family for supper and the dance, or $15 for the dance only. Children aged five and under were allowed in for free. Cocktails were scheduled from 5-5:30 p.m. followed by a buffet supper from 5:30 -7:30 p.m.
Aside from the dance later in the evening, there were games and contests, including a 50/50 draw, a kid’s fishing game and a Wheel of Fortune for adults, where participants could spin the wheel for a selection of services and gift certificates.
One of the prizes included an auction for a van ride. “We’re auctioning the van and the driver. An individual and five friends or family members will be taken to an event within a 200-kilometre radius anytime this year in 2020,” Holmes said as she described one of the contests arranged during this evening of supper, entertainment and dance.
Betty Hawkins – another member of the Gravelbourg Cares Board – was excited about the positive response to both the shuttle service and the fundraiser on Saturday evening. “It’s a fine example of community spirit. This shuttle will go to your doorstep and take you to appointments. It’s a safe way of doing things when you can’t go yourself.”
“This is awesome,” said Gravelbourg resident Margaret Arnold as she responded to a question about her views on this new local service. “This is best thing that Gravelbourg could have ever done – we’ve got lots of support.”
“This is another reason for making Gravelbourg your forever home,” added Brian Roberts, as he revealed his general opinion on the shuttle service and the community’s upbeat reaction to the Gravelbourg Cares fundraiser on Saturday.
