The 17th Annual Career Fair in Assiniboia was busy on the Tuesday morning of September 24, with many local high school students visiting the stalls of exhibitors arranged in the curling rink at the Prince of Wales Cultural and Recreation Centre. Delegates from several colleges and universities in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and even the U.S. were represented on Tuesday, as well as the Canadian Armed Forces, Hutch Ambulance, Western Financial Group and other national and regional employers.

“We’re here to talk about all the programs being offered,” said Valentina Chertez from the University of Saskatchewan.

“We’re talking about our programs and what we offer,” said Erin Lambert from Assiniboine Community College based in Brandon. “We actually do a lot of career fairs.” Lambert was especially impressed with the local initiatives expended to organize this regular career fair for those searching for future options. “You’ve got a pretty active chamber to put on this event,” Lambert added.

Although the majority of those present at Assiniboia’s career fair were high school students, there were also opportunities available for older people to consider. Frontline border officers from the Canada Border Services Agency were specifically hoping to attract trainees with life experiences beyond high school. Recruiter Lane Peterson from Glentworth suggested the high school students at the fair might consider the CBSA to be a career option further down the road.

The career fair also included presentations held throughout the POW, where representatives from colleges and businesses were able to explain in greater detail what they were offering to potential students and employees.
