Saskatchewan recording artist, entertainer and music educator, Amy Nelson, announced a series of unique drop-in, online group music lessons through the music school she founded, Sing Like A STAR.

This new series is open to children across Saskatchewan and is designed to provide a positive experience with zero commitment regardless of their family’s financial situation during this difficult time.

The classes are pay what they can and if that’s $0, that’s okay. The average class donation has been $8. With daytime and evening options via password-protected Zoom classes, children can participate one time only, or every week. Classes are currently scheduled through to the end of June and may be extended into the summer.

The classes include: Singing for Children, grade 1-8 (taught by Amy Nelson). Dancing for children age 3-5 and grade 1-6 (taught by Kelsey Howatt, accomplished singer/dancer and recent understudy for Belle in Globe Theatre’s Beauty and the Beast). Singing/Storytime for Children age 3-5 (taught by Carlie Kuz, Level 3 Early Childhood Educator).

“This series is the perfect solution for making sure that creative juices in children’s lives keep flowing. These classes give Saskatchewan kids a weekly positive experience in a group with others their own age,” said Amy Nelson.

Sing Like A STAR (SLAS) was founded in September 2011 by Nelson. In its first year, SLAS consisted of 44 students all taught by Nelson. Nine years later, SLAS has four locations throughout Saskatchewan (Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw and White City).

Twelve instructors and a part-time administrator are all working together to deliver this growing program. This team is proud to have helped over 2,000 students throughout Saskatchewan to grow their confidence through music lessons and gain skills they’ll carry with them throughout their lives.

The SLAS program is based on the idea that students can learn quality music skills, using any types of music.

With this belief in mind, Nelson hand-picked top quality instructors who teach the students the same solid music techniques they learned through their classical and classroom training; however, they teach those techniques using songs by artists and bands such as Imagine Dragons, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Maren Morris, Bruno Mars, etc.

Through using music that the students are hearing on the radio and internet, the teachers are able to keep the children engaged and excited about participating.

When they get older and move into private lessons, most students start expanding their musical tastes and dabbling in many different genres, as they develop their own personalities along their own unique musical preferences.

Boosting student confidence is a big goal of the program – a close second to ensuring quality music instruction. For this reason, Nelson makes sure the coaches are not only talented, but also enthusiastic and supportive.

Lastly, the program focuses on being fun. All coaches are full of energy and instructed to make sure that the students are enjoying themselves while they learn (especially now that the classes are currently online).

The business goals are working, proven by the program’s retention rate and referral program. In year nine of operating in Saskatchewan, Sing Like A STAR continues to offer its regular programming, including a four-week spring session beginning the first week of June. Although the company originally started with singing lessons as its primary program, the usual programming now includes piano, ukulele, guitar, bass and song writing offered in both group and one-on-one formats.
