The Assiniboia Art Council is bringing Culture Days to Assiniboia when September draws to a close. There are several events planned for people of all ages who are interested theatre, cinema arts and music from September 27-29 in Assiniboia. For sidewalk artists, attend Sidewalk Chalk Art at 1:30 p.m. in front of the Shurniak. A tailgate party outside at the Prince of Wales Cultural and Recreation Centre is set for Friday. Gainer the Gopher and Scott Heatcoat will appear from 5-7 p.m. at the outdoor party on the centre’s grounds for tailgaters, where beef on a bun, pop and chips will be sold for $6.
The Arcana Kings – the Roughrider’s favourite group – also known as the Johnny McCuaig Band – are the only paid-for-event beginning on September’s last weekend with a performance in the auditorium at the POW starting at 7:30 p.m.
The majority of gigs planned for Cultural Days in 2019 in Assiniboia are free to attend. Scott Heatcoat will facilitate a theatrical workshop at the Shurniak Gallery on Saturday from 10-11:30 a.m. On the same day, Heather Hobbs has a memoir writing workshop in the Assiniboia & District Public Library from 1-2 p.m. Chris Jordison, a former graphic artist from Regina who recently had his art shown at the gallery, is scheduled to host an art demo at the Shurniak from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
For budding cinemaphotographers, artists, writers and animators, Marie Beaudoin has planned a course titled Movie Magic, which will teach young people how to construct stories for animation features by taking examples from the film The Breadwinner, an animated movie about a girl living in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. Movie Magic – another free event – is running from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, September 29 at the Kay Cristo Room and the Olympia Theatre. This event will feature a showing of The Breadwinner along with studies and discussions led by Beaudoin on filmmaking, story-making techniques and much more both before and after the film. The Breadwinner is not recommended for children.
