Twinkle Tour

One of the many pleasures of Christmas involves strolling down a residential avenue on a crisp December night to see the houses decorated in cheery Christmas lights. If this is something you and your family enjoy doing, you should know that the Town of Assiniboia and the local Kinsmen Club are hosting the town’s first Twinkle Tour. This December, venture out into the town with other Assiniboians to see houses festooned with Christmas lights. Afterwards, you can vote on your favourite home at the Kin Hut. The tours will run from 6-8 pm on December 11-13, starting at the Kin Hut on 711, First Street West. Participant-decorators who’ve garnered the most votes from the Twinkle Tour will receive a grand prize.

“We’re meeting at the Kin Hut for friendship, snacks, and warm drinks,” said Stephanie VanDeSype, Assiniboia’s Recreation and Community Wellness Manager. Before the tour begins, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will also make an appearance at the Kin Hut. Don’t fret about having to drive yourself around on this tour, because the Kinsmen will have a wheelchair-accessible bus on hand for transport, or traditionalists can choose a merry ride on a horse-drawn sleigh. Take note: if you’re still tree-shopping, the Kinsmen will be selling Christmas trees at the hut.

“We have five homes that have registered so far,” VanDeSype said. “And people are really getting into it – the five homes that have registered, holy macaroni.” So, prepare to see some very creative house-decorators in Assiniboia this Christmas season. If you are interested in competing in the Twinkle Tour, call VanDeSype to sign-up at 306-642-5007.

On December 2, don’t miss out on Family Fun Day in Assiniboia – another entertaining happening this Christmas, and yet another event organized by Assiniboia’s Recreation and Community Wellness department. Family Fun Day begins with a free showing of the Christmas classic, Home Alone, at the Olympia Theatre at 12:00pm. From 2-6 pm, there will be free public skating at the Civic Centre. If you’d like, you can skate with Father Christmas from 4-6. But, there’s more. On Family Fun Day, the concession at the rink will be serving a supper special with wings and Caesar salad on the menu – the cost will be $5 for children and $11 for adults.
