A message from Mayor Bob Himbeault

In these trying times, it’s great to see the response to the Assiniboia Has Heart Facebook group. What a great idea for all our families. Our business community is doing their part. Many have closed.

In these trying times, it’s great to see the response to the Assiniboia Has Heart Facebook group. What a great idea for all our families.

Our business community is doing their part. Many have closed. Restaurants are closed to the public, but they are providing take-out and deliveries. Grocery stores and pharmacies are open and are providing a very valuable service. Other businesses are open, some with reduced hours with some providing delivery services. We would also like to add that we have had conversations with Potentia Renewables regarding the wind energy project – they have submitted a detailed response plan to prioritize the health and safety of workers and visitors of the surrounding communities.

Our healthcare services and medical clinics all have restrictions in place, so please call ahead before going.

What can we do as a responsible citizen of our community? First, we all must follow the Public Health guidelines. Stay at home unless you are needed to provide a valuable service. Do not attend any gatherings. If you are showing any symptoms, stay at home – if they get worse, call 811. If you have to leave home for some very important reason, please abide by physical separation, keeping two metres (6 feet) apart, especially when dealing with store clerks or cashiers. Please respect these very important individuals who are providing a valuable service during these times.

Also, a very important issue involves returning vacationers and snowbirds. These individuals must self isolate for 14 days with no exceptions – this is the law and there are fines, so please go straight home and do not stop for groceries or other needs.

Recreation and cultural facilities and programs have been closed, postponed or cancelled at this time. We ask that parents discourage their children from using public playground equipment as municipal workers are unable to disinfect this equipment to the level required.

The town’s office is closed to the public, but there are other methods of payment available that don’t require face to face interactions. Other essential community services will be maintained like water and sewer utilities, garbage and recycling pick-up as well as police and fire protection.

In closing, I wish everyone well. We will get through this, if we all abide by the rules.
