The U16 Assiniboia Aces softball team captured the Moose Jaw League championship. They will now compete at the Western Canadian championships.
The team has played an exiting season so far this year. All the team members are bantam age playing at a bantam-midget level in the Moose Jaw League.
The team also ranks as one of the youngest in the league with most players aged 15 years old and it includes three 14-year old peewee girls who were brought up to join them. Despite their youth, the Aces have stayed competitive in the league with a record of eight wins and three losses for the regular season.
The Aces started their playoff run with a win against Moose Jaw Thunder on July 4. They lost to the Nitro on July 11 which made the team pull together.
The Aces won their last three playoff games and finished the season off as Moose Jaw league champions.
The Saskatchewan B-level provincial championship was held on July 7 to 9 in Moose Jaw. There were 20 teams from across the province competing with the opportunity for the top two teams to go to Brandon, Manitoba, to compete in the Westerns. The Aces finished first in their pool and were undefeated.
In the finals, which were held on July 9, the Assiniboia team played its way into the gold medal game, but lost a close 3-2 battle against Unity.
As the second-place winners in the B level provincials, the girls have extended their season and will represent Saskatchewan along with the Unity team in the Western Canadian under-16 girls’ championship taking place at the Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex in Brandon Manitoba on August 10-13.
