Assiniboia Composite High School’s boys curling team was honoured with the 2017 SHSAA/MILK Sportsmanship Award on April 13.
Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association executive director Lyle McKellar was in Assiniboia to present the award to the curling team members, Kohlton Booth, Eric Hawkins, Dalton Wenaus, Connor Gronsdahl and Kale Froshaug, and their coaches Kevin Gronsdahl and Corbin Froshaug. The award came as a complete surprise to the boys curling team that finished fourth at the provincial high school boys curling finals hosted by Assiniboia in March.
While the team was disappointed to miss out on a medal at the provincials, their fellow students and teachers are extremely proud of them for their representation of ACHS and the community. Their team was the only one that finished the provincial round robin play undefeated.
McKellar acknowledged the entire school for their support during the award presentation.
“The award is presented to the team however it is the efforts of the entire school that contribute to shaping the characteristics that are worthy of being named the award recipient. The staff and students at your school should all share in this award.”
During the championship, the team, its coaches, and spectators were observed by a committee of SHSAA representatives, the host committee and game officials. The committees then recommend teams for the award. ACHS and their boys curling team was selected as the winner of this year’s Sportsmanship Award. This award represents the ideals of sportsmanship displayed at the provincial championship. The award is sponsored by the Saskatchewan Milk Marketing Board.
