Rockglen’s Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) are winding down their activities for the school year.
Recently, the SADD group brought in reality TV star Tornado Hunter Greg Johnson, second from left, who joined the Rockglen School SADD committee Gus and Casey Weisbeck, Jordan and Jaycee Jacobs and Marina Thomson, their supervisor. For its March campaign, the SADD committee created a bulletin board display “Don’t get swept up in bad choices” using the tornado theme to raise awareness to stay safe and avoid reckless behaviour.
The students brought in Johnson as guest presenter and his Tornado Hunter sidekick and videographer Chris Chittick who spoke to Rockglen school about making safe decisions and avoiding reckless behaviour. Also attending was Cst. Caroline Robert from the Assiniboia detachment of the RCMP. Rockglen SADD activities run during the school year from September to June.
The students can sign up at the school in the fall to join. The group holds noon meetings to work on projects. The committee had conducted many other activities during the year. A main fundraiser is the sorting of bottles and cans.
In October they ran an awareness campaign during Education Week. In December they sold tickets at the bake sale for a Christmas basket raffle. One of the last activities of the school year is the upcoming Red Ribbon campaign on graduation night where they distribute red ribbons to remind celebrants to make safe decisions as they enjoy graduation.
In the future the group is looking to involve younger students from the earlier grades. The Rockglen community has been very supportive of the SADD committee’s activities.
