Assiniboia’s Canada150 planning committee has confirmed a number of events for the July 1 Canada Day celebrations which will have a Canada 150 theme.
The Town of Assiniboia begins Canada Day events with a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. sponsored by the Southland Co-op. The event takes place in Central Park.
Next up, the Assiniboia and District Chamber of Commerce is organizing a parade at 10 a.m., which runs from the Civic Centre parking lot up along Centre Street. Businesses can register their float with the Chamber office.
Once again, the emergency services — Assiniboia and District Fire Department, Hutch Ambulance and Assiniboia’s RCMP Detachment — will be cooking up secret chilli recipes for the annual Chilli Cook Off. The event starts at noon and runs to 1:30 at Centennial Park. The public is invited to sample the chilli recipes and cast their vote. There will also be bouncy castles on site and a Canada Day cake.
Afternoon activities include the Demolition Derby once again organized by the Southern Cruisers. It will be at the fairgrounds starting at noon. Centennial Park and the Aquatic Centre will be hosting children’s activities including a Slip ‘n Slide, face painting, games and free swimming.
A street dance is scheduled for outside 121 Steakhouse from 5:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. The July 1 events concludes with a firework display at the fairgrounds starting at 10 p.m. For those wishing to volunteer for any of the events, they are asked to contact the organizers of the individual events.
Events marking the commemorative year will take place throughout the year. A Canada 150 supper was already held at St. Paul’s United Church in Assiniboia in February.
Upcoming events include a spring concert by the Assiniboia Community Choir featuring a Canadian theme on Sunday, May 7 at the Alliance church at 3 p.m. The Assiniboia and District Museum will be holding a Pioneer Dinner on Friday, May 12 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. to celebrate Canada150. There will be an authentic pioneer meal and old time fiddle music.
Southland Co-op will be sponsoring free outdoor movies to branch communities.
