Assiniboia Elementary holds Remembrance Day ceremony

Attending the event were special guests Sgt. Donnie Duplissea from the Assiniboia Detachment of the RCMP, Sgt. Steven Arens from 15 Wing Moose Jaw, Canadian Armed Forces, Officer Cadet Krista Kelly and Air Cadets, Warrant Officer Second Class Spencer Kelly and Corporal Keegan Kelly. The cadets placed flags at the front of the gymnasium and Khanesia Warken and Riley Bourgeson laid a wreath on behalf of the school.
Mrs. Marni Chadwick spoke to the students about the Borrow a Boot Program and the important of Vimy Ridge.
Many of the students placed a pair of shoes at the front of the gym with a poppy to represent a pair of combat boots at the Vimy Ridge monument. This project commemorates the Canadian soldiers fallen 100 years ago in the battle of Vimy Ridge. Sgt. Arens, who served in Afghanistan, spoke to the students about the 100th anniversary of the Passchendaele, another key battle that was important in the formation of Canada’s nationhood. Mrs. Blackwell read the Assiniboia Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion Honour Roll with a list of 103 names of those Canadians from the area who died in service to their country.
